the dvd

A 60 minute preview was screened at the Irish Film Institute 13 January 2007. This 80 minute DVD edit contains extra footage and interviews, including extra performance footage and the recording of the single JAZZ in Woodstock. The DVD also offers the chance to play in full the original WICKLOW HILLS video, the video for JAZZ, and from the Woodstock sessions the unseen OMAGH.

IMPORTANT - important - IMPORTANT - important

The Song For The Year DVD is currently only available as PAL for Ireland and UK. A United States NTSC version would prove too expensive for you to buy at the moment…currency markets and such. I hope to address this in early 2008 and may attempt a screening in NYC.

Colin Murnane’s Pierce Turner DVD documentary is available to fans first through this site. More than a biog or profile, Colin’s Pierce Turner DVD is a documentary about the way Pierce Turner lives as much as the way he works. This feature length DVD follows Pierce Turner for a year - a year that sees him self-fund an independent album and pioneer a parlour tour of Ireland.

From Pierce’s first piano in Wexford to his home-studio in Manhattan, and then on around the pianos of Ireland, THE SONG FOR THE YEAR documents not just Pierce Turner on DVD but also the stories of the houses and pianos he plays. Pierce was a pioneer of home-recording and the DVD provides a documentary of the process from Pierce Turner’s front room on 1st Avenue to the finish in a Woodstock studio. Problems that crop up in the year have surprising and surreal solutions, and neither the problem nor solution would ever arise were Pierce Turner not exisiting on the fringes in the first place. This Pierce Turner DVD documents a world that only exists because he, Pierce Turner, pulls it all together with his work.

THE SONG FOR THE YEAR documents on DVD the life of one of Ireland’s best solo performers (HOT PRESS AWARDED), one of Ireland’s most critically acclaimed musicians, and yet still one of Ireland’s least known artists. He lives life in the moment, with the ebb, flow and energy of a great performance. THE SONG FOR THE YEAR documents Pierce Turner on DVD as he is - living one vital gig of a life.

To: colin Murnane – the song for the year – pierce turner documentary DVD:  Congratulations on what you’ve created. We all enjoyed the wry sections…the New York manager spotting how Pierce could keep all the readies from the parlour gigs…the woman of the house’s conviction about where Pierce should play in her domain…you captured perfectly the growing tension in Woodstock… These insights elevate the documentary above a simple tribute. Well done and good luck! (JOHN REYNOLDS)
